Expanding its line of Flea3 USB3 Vision cameras, Point Grey has introduced a 2MP global shutter CMOS model. The FL3-U3-20E4 cameras use a global shutter CMOS sensor which features 4.5µm2 pixels providing 1600x1200px resolution at 59fps. Featuring smear and distortion-free imaging, this also offers an electronic rolling shutter mode for lower noise and improved dynamic range.

The Flea3 camera provides a 32MB frame buffer for retransmitting images and USB3 Vision support, as well as temperature, power and status monitoring, in a small size of just 29x29x30mm. It also provides a powerful image processing pipeline for colour interpolation, look up table and gamma. A proprietary USB 3.0 link layer and frame buffer-based architecture ensures optimal performance and reliability.

The FL3-U3-20E4 cameras are based on colour and monochrome versions of the EV76C570 Sapphire sensor from e2v, which has an optical format of 1/1.8". This enables users of the FL3-U3-13E4 (utilising a 1.3MP EV76C560 sensor) to upgrade without affecting optics.

Michael Gibbons, Director of Sales and Marketing, Point Grey, commented: “Flea3 was our very first USB 3.0 camera family and since its launch back in 2011 we’ve added a number of models ranging from 1.3 up to 8.8MP. This model is a cost effective upgrade for existing 1.3MP Flea3 USB 3.0 users and also offers more choice to users who are interested in global shutter CMOS sensors. It is an ideal camera for applications in industrial inspection, 3D imaging and bioscience.”

Available now with a three year warranty, the Flea3 FL3-U3-20E4 USB 3.0 camera is priced at $795 or €625.
