With logarithmic output, the new sensor is designed to cover a wide range of brightness (3 lux to 70 K lux). This makes ambient light sensing suitable for mobile and other applications, such as outdoor lighting and solar panels, which may be operated under direct sunlight.

The APDS-9007 is also designed to significantly reduce power consumption and save battery life in portable and mobile devices by enabling the auto adjustment of the LCD backlight intensity and keypad lighting. Packaged in a miniature chipLED lead-free surface mount package, Avago’s compact APDS-9007 also sustains temperature ranges of -40° C to 85° C and Vcc supply from 2 to 3.6 V.
