Renesas Technology Europe and Platinum Alliance partner emtrion GmbH, have announced the availability of their processor module HiCO.SH7722. This highly optimized and cost competitive processor module, in SODIMM-format, is ideal as a reference design for rapid and easy development of applications using highly integrated and ultra-low power multimedia processors such as the SH7722. It has been designed as a system solution to extend typical starter kits, without changes, into production-ready solutions for industrial applications. The SODIMM module supports the low power architecture of the processor and is therefore also suitable for portable applications.
The HiCO.SH7722 reference system consists of a carrier board, which a customer can easily adapt to the specific needs and project specifications, and the actual CPU-core-module in SO-DIMM format. The CPU module contains, in addition to the processor, the respective memories, USB2.0 Host and Device interfaces and a 100 Mbit Ethernet interface. All signals are available on a 200-pin SO-DIMM connector. The carrier board offers all components that are needed for highly integrated systems like audio- and video- CODECs, power supply and connectors.

“We are pleased to offer, together with our Platinum Alliance Partner emtrion, this reference system for our highly integrated SoC device SH7722 to respond to the increasing customer demand for complete system solutions and reference designs” says Carsten Wild, marketing engineer, Renesas Technology Europe. “Customers want an out-of-the box experience including leading edge processor products with operating systems and even application software. The extension of emtrion’s HiCO concept to our application processor family together with their experience in customer projects is the ideal scenario we can offer to our industrial customers”, adds Carsten Wild.

“emtrion has been working very closely with Renesas for many years during which several SuperH processor-based board products and customer specific products have been developed”, says Dipl.-Ing. Dieter Baur, CEO emtrion GmbH. “Our advantage is the excellent technical support and the early access to specifications Renesas provides us with. The addition of the HiCO.SH7722 to our product portfolio now provides our industrial customers the solution for a low power multimedia capable module satisfying their need for high performance, long time delivery and SW support”, adds Dieter Baur.

The SH7722 is a highly integrated single-chip SoC solution for audio, video and speech processing as well as graphics acceleration for highly sophisticated GUIs. The SH7722 incorporates the SH4AL-DSP CPU offering 600MIPS at 333MHz operation. The device also provides various peripheral functions that are suited to multimedia applications including a MPEG-4, H.264 capable video engine offering H.264 video encode/decode up to VGA resolution with 30FPS, a JPEG encode/decode hardware accelerator, a 2D graphics accelerator, a LCD controller, a 5M Pixel camera interface, and sound input/output.
The SH7722 incorporates SDRAM interface expandable up to 64-bit bus width and USB 2.0 high-speed function as well as a SD Card interface.

For easy application development and quick evaluation, the HiCO.SH7722 is supported by a comprehensive Linux Board Support Packages (BSP) featuring an up to date Linux kernel, compiler and tool-chain versions, as well as all drivers needed for quick start.
