Kontron has announced the VX6058, a new 6U VPX SBC with Intel Xeon processor D-1500 product family Octa-Core CPUs. Combined with the Kontron VX3920 10G/40G Ethernet switch and a 3U VPX backplane, the VX6058 is a perfect path to upgrade legacy 1G Ethernet switched multiprocessing systems to 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.

The 6U OpenVPX-compliant VX6058 features an 8-core 2.0 GHz Intel Xeon D processor, on-board soldered DDR4 SDRAM (with ECC), up to 12 MB of high speed cache memory and an embedded 2-D SXGA graphics controller.

The VX6058 provides dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet, two 1 Gb Ethernet controllers and M.2 slots for data storage on COTS SSD devices. In addition, SATA, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, serials and GPIOs are available on the front panel and to the rear backplane, as well as an optional XMC site for further I/O expansion.

Understanding the need to minimise development costs, the design of the VX6058 is compatible with 3U OpenVPX slot profiles for use in cost-optimised 3U VPX environments. The VX6058 is pin-compatible with the previous generation of Kontron's 6U SBCs and can be cooled by the 17CFM air-flow of a legacy 6U VME or cPCI chassis. This makes VX6058 an optimal solution for a cost-effective upgrade of legacy 6U multiprocessing systems.

"Our VX6058 greatly streamlines technology upgrades while providing the right balance of computing performance and power efficiency," said Alain Spors, Sales Director at Kontron. "With its security protection through an integrated TPM secure element, the VX6058 brings technology insertion to a higher grade".

The VX6058 is ideal for use in Size Weight, Power and Cost (SWaP-C)-constrained systems and general-purpose missions, ranging from industrial to extreme rugged defense applications and is available now in Standard commercial Air-cooled and Rugged Air-cooled builds.
