VATN displays offer LCD/OLED compromise

VATN displays from Midas Components are available for the first time at Rapid Electronics. The displays provide wide viewing angles, very high contrast ratios and low backlight leakage make VATN (Vertically Aligned Twisted Nematic) LCD displays an ideal compromise between LCD and OLED functionality and performance and an excellent alternative for the buyer looking for a display at a performance and price point between LCD and OLED.

The liquid crystals of a VATN display remain perpendicular to the substrate when the device is switched off. When a voltage is applied the oval shaped VATN molecules align vertically rather than horizontally, acting as a more effective barrier to the backlight. Leakage is kept to a minimum. Approximately 5-10% of light escapes from twisted nematic or super twisted nematic effect displays, but less than 1% is lost from VATN LCDs. The effect is that bright coloured characters are rendered on a truly black background, without the hot spots that might occur in traditional LCD displays.

The key attributes of the Midas VATN LCD display range are:

  • Very high contrast ratio – 120:1
  • Wide viewing angles, up to 170° (Horizontal) and 110° (Vertical)
  • -30 to +80°C Operating Temperature
  • Built-in HD44780 compatible controllers
  • High backlight brightness
  • Super black background

The modules are available in seven industry standard character sizes, such as 8x2, 16x1, 16x2 and 20x4. Backlight colours include white, yellow, blue, green and red.
