A new series of RGB multi chip LEDs that provide a range of high-powered ALGaInP red, and InGaN green and blue LEDs that can be used in general lighting applications, vending machines, amusement and gaming equipment, and for backlighting TFT displays, is now available from Solid State Supplies.
Each module combines eight LEDs in four or eight separate channels and the modular design allows the SEPM devices to be assembled easily into string arrays by simply connecting the modules in series. Power sensitive, using 50 1m/W with all LEDs illuminated, the equivalent to CCFLs, the modules provide a high optical output of 25 lm when all LEDs are on.

The devices also provide superior colour balance throughout the display because of the high density of LEDs that can be achieved. In turn, this minimises the distance that power and control lines must run between LED modules and from the LED modules to the control electronics.

The white resin compound is specially formulated to enhance the reflection and transmission of the generated light. Improved thermal dissipation is achieved through the built in silver plated heatsink which can be mated directly to an external radiator through the PCB for superior heat conduction which enables designers to pack the modules with their 5.23 mm × 13.7 mm footprint, and a low profile 2.5-mm height, more densely where required.

The leadframe is silver plated, providing a highly-reflective surface for the bottom and sides of the emitting area. The terminals are coated the same.
