“It’s a game changer for the automotive industry”. Avinath Ghirnikar, Director of Technical Marketing for Marvell’s Connectivity Business Group is not being shy in proclaiming the virtues of his company’s high-efficiency wireless 802.11ax solution for connected vehicles.

Now and in the future more and more data will be generated inside and outside cars. Advanced wireless connectivity is the key but as Ghirnikar points out, “each car will need to share the network with potentially hundreds of other cars that might be in its vicinity.”

“That’s why 802.11ax will be a lifesaver for the industry.” he adds. “Customers will want and expect the same experience in their car as in their home. That means a fast, reliable, secure connection.”

Our 802.11ax solution is the chip that covers those requirements,” he asserts.

The 88Q9098 features 2x2 plus 2x2 concurrent dual Wi-Fi., dual-mode Bluetooth 5/Bluetooth Low Energy and 802.11p for connected vehicles. It enables gigabit-level performance, superior reliability, and enhanced security for the car. The concurrent dual Wi-Fi architecture integrates two complete Wi-Fi subsystems into a single SoC, enabling two independent 2x2 data streams to run concurrently and at full throughput.

One use case demanding this capability is when one Wi-Fi radio is dedicated to mobile phone projection while the other is streaming video to and from mobile/accessory devices in the car. The 88Q9098 enables reuse of a single solution across infotainment and telematics applications, delivering multimedia streaming, secure over-the-air updates, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and hot-spot functionality.

Purpose-built for the car, this SoC offers the most complete set of automotive features, including 802.11p to support vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V), Bluetooth Low Energy Long Range to enable new connectivity to your phone and key fob from up to 500 meters, and customisable firmware to enable OEMs to enhance and differentiate their solutions.

The device also meets the stringent quality, reliability and temperature standards required for automotive AEC-Q100 grade 2 operation from -40C up to +105C.

It also features On-chip Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) hardware

acceleration for secure V2X application. And the device stands up to the stringent quality, reliability and temperature standards required for automotive AEC-Q100 grade 2 operation from -40C up to +105C.

Target applications include In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI), Telecommunications Control Unit, Remote Diagnostics, • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Connected Gateway and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communications
