AVerMedia Technologies has selected Cypress’s EZ-USB FX3 USB 3.0 controller for its HD video capture card, the ExtremeCap U3. The card leverages the EZ-USB FX3 as a USB 3.0 device bridge with bandwidth of 5 Gbps, enabling it to record and stream game play at Full-HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and 60 fps via HDMI or other component inputs, without requiring compression that degrades image quality.

Claimed to be the industry’s only programmable USB 3.0 peripheral controller, EZ-USB FX3 provides SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connectivity in virtually any system. It features a built-in ARM9 CPU core with 512KB RAM to deliver 200MIPS of computational power and interfaces to connect to serial peripherals such as SPI, UART, I2C and I2S. The highly configurable General Programmable Interface can be programmed in 8-, 16- and 32-bit configurations with data rates up to 400MBps and allows the FX3 to interface directly to nearly any processor, ASIC or FPGA. Highly flexible, the EZ-USB FX3 makes it simpler for developers to add USB 3.0 connectivity to any system.

“EZ-USB FX3 is ideal  for handling HD video and audio data transfer, providing the bandwidth for smooth streaming without annoying hiccups. AVerMedia’s ExtremeCap U3 video capture card is an excellent showcase of FX3’s unique programmability and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 performance,” Mark Fu, Senior Marketing Director, USB 3.0 Business Unit, Cypress.

Frank Yeh, Director, Research and Development, AVerMedia, comments: “We set out to design the ExtremeCap U3 knowing that gamers want to preserve the HD quality of their game-play footage, and EZ-USB FX3 was the ideal solution that met our demands for both performance and flexibility. In addition, Cypress cooperated closely with our design teams to help us make full use of FX3’s programmability and to get the ExtremeCap U3 to market quickly.”

Available now in volume production, the EZ-USB FX3 solution is available in a 10x10mm 121-ball BGA packages or a 131-ball Wafer-Level Chip Scale Package measuring just 4.1x5.1 mm.
