Following the launch of its successful R32C MCAL 2.1, Renesas Technology Europe today announced a new Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL), Release 3.1, for its R32C/100 Series microcontrollers.
Combined with EB tresos AutoCore, an AUTOSAR Basic Software (BSW) from EB (Elektrobit), and EB tresos Studio, EB's ECU configuration tool, the new MCAL creates an AUTOSAR software platform that is compliant with the specification of the Herstellerinitiative Software (HIS) Recommended Optimization. This scalable, fully integrated R32C software package will equally benefit OEMs and suppliers. Sample shipments will begin in March 2010.

AUTOSAR specifications are currently adopted in microcontrollers with relatively large memory and high CPU performance. However, AUTOSAR support for 16/32 bit microcontrollers with smaller ROM capacities is also required. This is why HIS, an organization comprising five German auto-makers (Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche, and Volkswagen), has released its HIS Recommended Optimization for AUTOSAR specification as a recommended optimization configuration based on AUTOSAR Release 3.1. This enables AUTOSAR specifications to be used in MCUs with a smaller memory capacity.

Renesas, in collaboration with EB, has developed the AUTOSAR development environment for the R32C/100 Series that includes the following features:

* Integrated R32C AUTOSAR Core Release 3.1

* Compliance with the HIS Recommended Optimization for AUTOSAR specification, enabling reduction of the MCU memory size and the CPU load

* User-friendly configuration with EB tresos Studio

Renesas also plans to implement support for the HIS Recommended Optimization for AUTOSAR specification in its SH-2A products. The specification is to be modified to correspond to AUTOSAR Version 4.0, which was released at the end of 2009.

In addition, Renesas will provide a system validation environment defined by a conformance test association.

AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System Architecture) is a worldwide development partnership of car manufacturers, suppliers and other companies from the electronics, semiconductor and software industry. Their common objective is to produce a standardized automotive software architecture in order to enhance software reusability with integrated or common software components, and to reduce development costs. Renesas Technology has been actively participating in AUTOSAR projects, including early specification discussions, and has been a Premium Member since July 2004.
