IAR Systems today announced the availability of software development tools for Atmel's 32-bit AVR UC3C family of microcontrollers that feature an extended instruction set capable of hardware-accelerated floating point arithmetic. IAR Embedded Workbench is currently the only tool suite offering compiler support for the FPU on UC3C devices. Developers using devices in the UC3C series will benefit from the integrated floating-point compiler support provided in IAR Embedded Workbench.
The early release of tools and software for the UC3C family has been made possible thanks to the close partnership between IAR Systems and Atmel. The two companies have a long history of working together on the development of microcontroller hardware and compiler support. The IAR C/C++ compiler was developed iteratively with the AVR UC3 architecture, and as a result, it fits very well with the instruction set.

IAR Systems is our most popular development tools partner, and we are very happy to launch the UC3C family with their full support said Haakon Skar, Atmel's AVR UC3 Marketing Director. We know from previous experience that IAR Embedded Workbench is highly appreciated by our customers for reliability, capability and ease-of-use.

The processing performance of the UC3 family, now further enhanced with hardware floating-point support will be well received by system designers because of the possibility to replace a two-chip DSP and MCU solution with a single device said Henrik Flodell, Product Manager at IAR Systems. We are able to make such an early release for the UC3C family due to the long-term commitment that we have to support AVR users with reliable and powerful development tools

Hardware supported floating point operations are much faster than the equivalent library routines. By implementing compiler support for the floating point instructions, IAR Embedded Workbench improves the software performance of the AVR UC3C family. This is further enhanced by the implementation of available DSP instructions and advanced optimizations.

IAR Embedded Workbench for AVR UC3 provides a completely integrated development environment including a project manager, editor, build tools and debugger. In a continuous workflow, you can create source files and projects, build applications and debug them in the simulator or on hardware using AVR ONE! or AVR JTAGICE MkII probes.
