Microdul Gains Deeper Insight Into Finger Detection Sensors With CST EM STUDIO

Microdul, a company specializing in high quality microelectronics, realizes success with the help of CST. One of Microdul’s leading technologies includes the proximity sensor chip, which together with remote sensing plates are implemented into devices such as mobile phones. In determining the sensor’s electrostatic behaviour, CST EM STUDIO is used to address the challenge of distinguishing between intentional switching operation and environmental interference.

The design parameters affecting performance are improved, helping Microdul meet the needs of their customers when it comes to proximity sensors.

The Challenge: Reliability Of Electrostatic Proximity Sensors In A Difficult Environment

Microdul produces proximity sensor chips that can be used with remote sensing plates. Changes in plate capacitance are detected by a digital auto-calibrating algorithm. An approaching human finger typically causes a switching operation.

The capacitive switch can be used for many non-contact applications. The main challenge is to develop a sensor which can reliably distinguish between intentional switching operation and environmental interference.
