Community Wi-Fi Software can Create Community-wide Hot Spots

Broadcom has today announced that it is the first to integrate Community Wi-Fi software on all DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and gateway platforms. Community Wi-Fi transforms residential Wi-Fi modems and gateways into hot spots, giving cable subscribers quick Wi-Fi connections on the go. With Broadcom’s new cable modem platform, operators have networks of hot spots without having to deploy new equipment.

Key functionality of Broadcom’s Community Wi-Fi software includes:

•Supports multi-mode connect to operator hot spot infrastructure
•Enhanced authorization and accounting messaging
•Complete session creation, termination, redundancy and keepalive
•Enhanced MIB and DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS configuration file control

Currently in field and lab trials, Broadcom’s Community Wi-Fi software is available on all DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem/gateway platforms and can be upgraded on existing DOCSIS 3.0 devices.

Paul Hendriks, Chief Technology Officer, Ziggo:
Broadcom’s technology provided us with an essential building block in our approach to supply customers with Wi-Fi beyond their homes. We are currently running a pilot to gain experience with larger groups of customers in a realistic urban setting.

Jay Kirchoff, Broadcom Vice President of Marketing, Cable Broadband:
This technology enables cable operators to quickly expand their service offering to include wireless hot spots, allowing subscribers to remotely access the services previously only available inside their homes. We see this strengthening operator’s competitiveness.
