The standard defines objectives that must be met by avionics equipment manufacturers according to European Aviation Safety Agency and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines. DO-254 was formally recognised by the FAA in 2005 as a means of specifying the compliance of complex electronic hardware solutions used in airborne systems. The standard’s main purpose is to drive a discipline and methodology of capturing and tracking design requirements from the concept phase through development, validation and verification.
