A solenoid which offers double the useful stroke of a standard solenoid has been developed by Geeplus. To produce a solenoid which develops useful force over a long stroke with a flat force characteristic, the company used it’s tubular solenoid design to modify the geometry of the Super Stroke Solenoid’s pole‐piece and magnetic return path.

Allowing approximate position control over a large linear stroke, the solenoid has many of the characteristics of a proportional solenoid. According to Geeplus, the Super Stroke Solenoid is more cost-effective than other long‐stroke actuators or proportional solenoid designs.

In applications where a few linear actuators are needed, but where air supply is otherwise not required, the solenoid is a good replacement for small air cylinders. The Super Stroke Solenoid allows machinery to be made independent of air supply, removing the need for compressors, airline, and air preparation equipment and their associated maintenance.

Over a long linear stroke, the force is approximately proportional to applied current, and is uniform over the operating stroke. Tension of wire, fibres, or web material can be controlled using this characteristic. To realise an actuation system where position can be controlled proportional to the applied current, the characteristic can also be applied against a spring.

The Super Stroke Solenoid is available in a long stroke version and a larger long stroke version. The long stroke version, which is available in four sizes with 32 and 38mm diameters, delivers 3N at 20mm compared with 5N at 10-12mm from a standard solenoid. At 32mm, the larger long stroke version delivers 5N. The solenoid is suitable for gas or fluid control systems and can be used for tension control in filament or web handling machinery.
