Robots target material handling and machine tending

Expanding the company's portfolio of small robots, ABB has introduced the IRB 1200. This compact robot is designed for materials handling and machine tending applications which require flexibility, ease of use, compactness and short cycle times while maintaining large working envelopes.

The IRB 1200 excels without sacrificing working range or functionality. Featuring no offset in axis two, the robot can achieve a longer stroke than others. This means that it can function even when placed very close to the work piece. This long stroke also allows for a much more compact installation when the robot is mounted on the ceiling inside a small cell, such as in electronics machining or polishing applications.

Available in two variants, the IRB 1200 handles a wide range of applications and are cost effective, due to the commonality of parts. With both variants able to be mounted at any angle and supplied with IP40 protection as standard (IP67 is available as an option), the 700mm reach variant can carry a payload of up to 7kg, while the reach 900mm variant can carry up to 5kg.

Designed for easy integration, electrical and air connections can be made to the robot via side ports or an underline option. An Ethernet port also eases integration. These connections are routed internally on the robot from very close to the wrist flange all the way to the foot, thus enhancing the compactness of the package.

The IRB 1200 also features smooth surfaces, making it easy to clean and maintain in environments such as CNC machine tending and materials handling in the food industry.
