STMicroelectronics’ new generation NFC controller

STMicroelectronics unveiled the ST54L NFC controller with an integrated secure element. This new integrated circuit (IC) empowers mobile devices, including smartphones, wearables, and tablets, with secure access to contactless services like payment and ticketing via the STPay-Mobile platform.

The ST54L chip is designed to accommodate a range of services such as NFC-enabled mobile payments, transit ticketing solutions, access control systems like Digital Car Key, and combined services that require an eSIM. It is equipped with Thales’ secure mobile operating system, which operates on the secure element embedded within the chip, a robust solution arising from the collaborative efforts of ST and Thales.

The newly introduced ST54L offers an enhancement in NFC RF performance and a significant increase in non-volatile storage capacity, by over 50%, reaching 3.3MByte. This expansion allows for the addition of more services and provides ample space for users to download extra eSIM profiles, supporting Multiple Enabled Profiles (MEP) or other secure applications.

Currently in mass production, the ST54L has been integrated into the latest Google Pixel 8 smartphones and has received validation from several leading mobile platform providers, ensuring a smooth integration for smartphone manufacturers.

The chips are manufactured using STMicroelectronics’ embedded Flash technology at the company’s own semiconductor plant, with a complete in-house production line.
