Steatite Rugged is helping Simon Mackenzie-Smith’s bid to complete the 2010 Paris to Peking Motor Challenge. Mackenzie-Smith, Chairman of UK for Bank of America Merrill Lynch, needed a rugged laptop for the charity trip and Steatite will contribute a General Dynamics GD6000 laptop for his challenge.
With unpredictable weather forecasts – as well as sand and dust to contend with – Steatite’s contribution of a rugged notebook will deliver the team with reliability and the peace of mind that they will be able to keep in touch for the duration. The GD6000 will provide a perfect mobile office and communications centre on their adventure across hazardous and extreme terrain. It has a sun light readable screen that incorporates ‘Dynavue’, GD’s own proprietary technology which offers an unparallel contrast ratio and visibility in the brightest sunlight conditions.

Integrated touch screen technology enables ease of operation with greater accuracy on the go and it is also fully drop, shock & vibration proof to survive the rigors of the trip. It is also spill proof and will survive rain or sand storms intact. Finally it has a Core 2 Duo processor with a quick 2.53GHz processor allowing for speedy communications.

The rally kicks off on 10th September 2010 in China and the team is expected to cover some 14,000 kilometres – retracing the steps of motor car pioneers who raced over the same route in 1907. The rally is expected to take five weeks to complete, passing through the Gobi desert and the wild steppes of Central Asia before crossing Iran, Turkey and into Europe across the Bosphorus.
