Kontron has announced another addition to the rugged and extremely quiet KISS industrial server family, the Kontron Industrial Silent Server KISS 4U PCI761. The new, 4U rack-mount server with 64-bit Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processor and long-term availability combines outstanding performance density with extreme flexibility via 12 expansion slots. Application developers will benefit from a flexible platform which can be configured with a wide range of cost-efficient ATX standard components corresponding to the individual application requirements.
Outstanding performance density and comprehensive configurability for I/O-intensive applications

The Kontron KISS 4U PCI761 rack-mount server offers broad scalability, from the Intel Core i3 to the Intel Core i7 processor, with up to four 2.8 GHz cores and 8 GB DDR3-1333 RAM. The industrial server also integrates a PICMG 1.3 backplane, which can be populated with up to 12 full-size PCI and PCI Express expansion cards for customized I/O designs. These features make the Kontron KISS 4U PCI761 the ideal basis for a broad range of applications including asynchronous real-time applications in measurement and testing technology, image processing and process control, which benefit from the maximum server performance and bandwidth. Industrial automation applications also benefit from the expanded feature set, for example, in control rooms and control centers where the server can be used with several graphics cards in multi display installations. In addition, the Kontron KISS 4U PCI761 is a fit for General Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) solutions in medical and military technology as well as simulation applications and high-end audio processing.

The integrated Kontron PICMG 1.3 system host board PCI-761 offers an MTBF of about 100,000 hours, which ensures low maintenance costs and high-reliability. In addition, the extensive management and security functions based on Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT) with a trusted platform module (TPM) make remote administration an easy task. With Intel AMT 6.0, tasks such as operating system installation and maintenance, BIOS configuration and hardware diagnostics can be carried out remotely and network-based, without additional remote management hardware. With Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT) and the onboard TPM, the Kontron KISS 4U PCI-761 also ensures a high level of system security, for example, through hardware encryption of all transmitted data.

Unified features of the Kontron Industrial Silent Servers
Kontron’s Industrial Silent Servers offer higher environmental resistance than conventional servers with their resistance to shock and vibration and temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C. The servers are also resistant against humidity of 10-95% due to their IP20-protected front (optional IP52). Designers also benefit from the level of design and manufacturing quality, a high MTBF and user-friendly administration options, all of which contribute to a low total cost of ownership. The systems offer long-term availability of identical system configurations meaning that service is simplified and that industry-specific certifications are only required once for the whole product lifecycle.

The feature set in detail
The Kontron Industrial Silent Server KISS 4U PCI761 can be equipped with the Intel Core i3-540 (3.06 GHz), Intel Core i5-660 (3.33 GHz) or Intel Core i7-860 (2.8 GHz) processor and up to 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM. In addition, it offers versatile possibilities for expansion via two different backplane configurations: either 7x 32 Bit PCI full size plus 4x PCIe x1 and 1x PCIe x16 – or 3x 32 Bit PCI full size plus 4x PCIe x1, 4x PCIe x4 and 1x PCIe x16. These rich I/O options offer designers the option to use several expansion boards with different bus systems in parallel, simplifying overall system configuration. Furthermore, interfaces for 2x Gigabit Ethernet, 12x USB 2.0 (2x front, 4x back, 6x pin header) and 2x COM (1x RS232/422/485, 1x RS232) are available on the board, granting high connectivity without the need to use additional expansions. Video (DVI-D, VGA) and audio ports (mic-in, line-in, line-out) and PS/2 ports for mouse and keyboard top off the interface offering.

Storage media can be connected via six SATA 2.0 interfaces with on-board RAID 0/1/5/10 support for especially secure and redundant data storage. Three 5.25“ bays, a 3.5“ bay as well as a slim-bay (5.25“ wide, 3.5“ high) offer sufficient space for shock-protected hard disks and hard disk arrays such as the Kontron KISS DA series and DVD drives, or the optional Kontron hard disk subsystem KISS Stor with built-in RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 functionality.

The Kontron Industrial Silent Server KISS 4U PCI761 is CE-certified and UL-qualified. It is validated for Red Hat Linux, Windows XP and Windows 7 (32 and 64 Bit) and will be shipped as a standard system directly from stock or it can be configured to meet customer-specific requirements, tested as a complete system and delivered as an independently certified solution. The Kontron KISS 4U PCI761 is available in EMEA immediately and in America and APAC starting in September 2011. For preventive maintenance and remote system monitoring, the industrial rackmount servers optionally implement Kontron PCCM Condition Monitoring.
