Today the FW-6485 is available for sample orders; this most recent Lanner Electronics Network Security Appliance is a versatile system built around the VIA CN700 chipset and the VIA C7 1.5 GHz processor. Included are two PCI Expansion slots and the ability to switch on a low power mode, making this platform customizable to low power and green conscience users.
According to Terence Chou, one of Lanner’s premiere Network Computing product managers, the FW-6485, “is quite an exciting network appliance, due to the versatility of the dual PCI expansion slots and VIA Padlock Security- an ideal security platform for small businesses.”

Included with the VIA processor and chipset comes the VIA Padlock security engine- when enabled provides extensive network security. The VIA Padlock security engine can encrypt and decrypt signals throughout your network. With the hardware based integrated security tools located in the processor cores, there is little to no impact on overall performance of the appliance.

The FW-6485 utilizes the VIA C7, 1.5 GHz processor and is run by the VIA CN700 + 8251 Chipset. The front-side bus carries a bandwidth of 400MHz for high flexibility. For a hard drive, the FW-6485 can utilize dual 2.5” hdd or one 3.5” hdd; the hard drives are connected via SATA. As a network security application the FW-6485 comes with 4 RJ45 ports for Ethernet controlled through a Realtek RTL8100 operated controller. Other ports include 1 DB9 RS-232 Console port and 2 USB 2.0 controllers. For even more possible applications the FW-6485 comes with 2 extra PCI Expansion slots and one additional Mini PCI slot.

Other features include an internal watchdog, a real time clock and LED display. The system is designed to run on both Windows and Linux based operating systems.

While the FW-6485 is capable of handling security and other network applications, a low power mode can be turned on when fewer networks apps are needed. The FW-6485 has a ULV (ultra low voltage) mode to use less electricity with a max system speed of 500MHz. For cooling the system uses a Smart Fan, which can be set to turn on when the CPU reaches a certain heat. Both of these functions ensure that the FW-6485 uses the minimum amount of electricity to save money and power.
