Volex Group plc, the global interconnect cable assemblies and power cables group, has been selected by a leading provider of telecoms infrastructure to manufacture a range of its Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs) for telephony and broadband environments. This opportunity will allow Volex to expand its product range and provide more technical value-add services enabling the Original Equipment Manufacturer to consolidate its supplier base.
Having established a long-term partnership with this customer by supplying copper and fibre optic cable assemblies over many years, this new opportunity represents further technology value-added services by Volex in designing and manufacturing more comprehensive solutions targeted to the datacom and telecom sectors.

The ODF, for which Volex is one of the selected suppliers, is a 19-inch or ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) rack system box which contains fibre optics, mechanical mounts and cabling. Pre-terminated units such as these are effective for high-volume, dense terminations where roll out needs to be fast yet precise - such as in FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) deployments. Volex will now be supplying both the internal fibre optic cable assemblies and the box unit itself.

Dr John Hannigan, Engineering Director, Volex Group, comments, “In the past, Volex has been regarded mainly as a cable-assemblies manufacturer and solutions provider, so this deal represents an important move into the supply of more comprehensive and technically challenging combination solutions. We are delighted that our relationship with a major customer has developed to a stage where we have their trust to take on a major manufacturing contract such as this.”

Jeff Bierman, Senior VP, Volex Group, comments, “Volex has been selected to manufacture the ODFs based on the longevity and success of the existing relationship between the two companies. As well as offering a competitive pricing structure, we can also deliver technical competence and high quality manufacturing processes.”

Bierman concludes, “Contracts which evolve Volex’s supply offering, such as this partnership, represent an important step-change for Volex with our aim to increase engagement with our key industry partners. The telecom space is a particular focus for Volex moving forward, and we hope to further develop our product portfolio to include more designed multi-component solutions.”
