Molex has announced a new microSD/SIM card combo connector that combines two memory card functions in one form factor to free up more PCB space for portable equipment, such as mobile phones, PDAs and other compact mobile devices. The new connector includes a reverse mount eight-circuit microSD slot and options for a six- or eight-circuit normal mount SIM card slot.

With a mounted height of just 2.75mm (.108”) and width and depth dimensions of 17.70mm (.697”) each, the new connector has the smallest overall dimensions of any similar combo version in the market today. Visible solder tails are located on two sides of the connector for easy mounting and inspection, while still providing superior co-planarity control of a maximum of 0.10mm (.004”) after reflow soldering.

The microSD portion includes a push-push eject function for easy insertion and withdrawal of the small microSD cards. The slightly larger SIM card area uses an economical push-pull eject method. Features include a detect switch, which identifies card insertion and also provides a wiping function for good electrical contact. A card polarisation feature prevents improper card insertion and also protects against the detect switch being accidentally engaged. Other features include reliable mating/unmating for up to 7,000 cycles.

Physical features include gold plating for good cycling and secure electrical contact, a wide housing area for pick-and-place, and embossed tape packaging. The connector is rated at 0.5A and 100V (for microSD) and 5V (for SIM).
