Hirose has developed a rugged flexible printed circuit (FPC) / flat flexible connector (FFC) that offers high-heat resistance for harsh environment applications. With an operating temperature of up to 105ºC, the FH63 Series satisfies severe heat requirements found in automotive applications. The FH63 Series is currently available in a 30 and 40-position versions and accepts shielded FFC for EMI prevention. Additional circuit sizes will become available.

The FPC/FFC connector meets rugged automotive mechanical characteristic requirements for shock and vibration as well as other environmental requirements including resistance to humidity, corrosion, extreme temperatures, and hydrogen and sulfur gasses.

The FH63 Series offers high contact reliability via a two-point contact design with a two independent springs that provide a wiping action that prevents contact failure from dust, dirt and other contaminants. The FPC connector has a user-friendly design, which includes wide tapers that provide smooth FPC insertion.

Although the tapers and spring contact mechanism offers a low insertion force, the connector produces a high-retention force for improved reliability in demanding automotive applications such as car navigation, laser radar, millimeter-wave radar, drive recorder, audio display and in-vehicle camera systems.

A single-action lock design delivers easy FPC insertion and emits a clear tactile click to confirm complete insertion. The single-action lock simplifies assembly, as it is designed for robotic assembly.

The FPC/FFC connector supports USB 3.0, Embedded DisplayPort ver1.3 and HDMI 1.4a standards. The high-speed connector supports high-speed data transmission up to 5.4Gbps. Accepting FPC, FFC and shielded FFC ribbons, the connector has a 0.5mm pitch and height of 2.8mm.

"The FH63 Series connector is the latest version of Hirose's unique flexible printed circuit connectors designed to meet high-speed requirements for wide range of automotive electronic applications that are often subjected to continual shock and vibration," said Bill Kysiak, Product Marketing Manager for Hirose Electric USA. "The single action lock combines ease of assembly with high reliability and ruggedness."

The FH63 Series is also used in FA cameras, gaming consoles, industrial control units, medical devices, notebook PCs, servo amplifiers, and TVs. The connector meets halogen-free requirements and is RoHS compliant.
