Expanding the company’s portfolio of All-in-One single coil fan drivers, Melexis has introduced a 600mA single coil fan driver IC targeting energy efficient cooling system designs. The MLX90297 incorporates a minimum speed setting and a speed curve which can be tuned through inclusion of just one additional resistor.

The MLX90297 integrates a high sensitivity Hall Effect sensor and two powerful half bridge output stages. Low RDS(on) and built-in current limiting allow the device to be used with fans featuring coil resistances lower than 10Ω.

Soft start and soft switching mechanisms enable industry-leading acoustic noise levels, according to the manufacturer, and low vibration at higher speeds without sacrificing maximum motor torque. The fan driver IC also features ESD performance to 9kV HBM.

Dirk Leman, Product Line Manager, Fan Drivers, Melexis, comments: ”Our All-In-One MLX90287 in straight lead SOIC8 product has been received very warmly by the fan driver market. It lowers the total BOM cost and the complexity of the PCB design significantly by reducing the number of discrete components involved. Previously up to 22 resistors and transistors might have been needed for a TSSOP16 fan driver with an external hall sensor. Now just 2 resistors, and one decoupling capacitor are required for a SOIC8 fan driver solution."

The MLX90297 single coil fan driver IC is available in a straight lead SOIC8 package. A 3x3mm DFN10 exposed pad package is also offered for very small fans and fans with motor currents up to 600mA.

“The MLX90297 is a natural evolution based on customer feedback. It offers a highly optimised solution for demanding high volume applications like VGA and CPU cooling, as well as white goods, and even low end server applications,“ added Leman.
