Evaluation boards aid audio amplifier design

Availability and full design support capabilities for a new platform of evaluation boards for Class D audio systems from GaN Systems is announced by Richardson RFPD.

GaN E-HEMT fast switching, low output capacitance (Coss), and zero reverse recovery charge (QRR) enable a new level of performance for Class D audio amplifiers.

The new GS-EVB-AUD-xxx1-GS GaN-based evaluation board platform from GaN Systems, provides an excellent reference design for implementing a high-performance, low-cost audio system.

The Class D amplifier and companion power supply designs are optimised for sound quality, thermal performance, size and cost.

Key features of the 2-channel Class D amplifier include:

  • Complete Class D amplifier
    • Multi audio signal inputs
    • Bridge-tied load output
    • Option to switch between open-loop and closed-loop designs with optimized DSP control of each configuration
  • High-performance audio
    • 200 W/Ch (8 Ω), 300 W/Ch (4 Ω)
    • > 108 dB SNR and dynamic range
    • < 0.01% THD+N (8 Ω, 1 W)
    • +/- 0.5 dB frequency response (8 Ω)
  • High-performance output
    • 96% efficiency
    • Reduced thermals

Key features of the companion switch mode power supply include:

  • Complete audio LLC SMPS
    • Universal AC line input
    • Easy integration with GaN amplifier
    • Common-mode AC filter
  • High-performance audio
    • 400 W continuous, 550 W peak
    • +/- 32 VDC dual-rail output
  • High-performance output
    • No heatsinking, no cooling
    • High efficiency, 40% loss decrease
    • EMI/EMC friendly
