Autonomous robots need to quickly detect and classify objects. Farmers need early warning of plant disease and insects. Production lines need precise defect alerts.

Engineering challenges come in many forms, and now designers can be better equipped to solve them with the new Dual Cam SYZYGY module from Avnet.

With this add-on peripheral module, designers can now create faster computer imaging solutions at a much lower cost of entry. They can also more quickly design products that need more than one camera.

The SYZYGY format allows developers to connect the camera to processing platforms supporting the SYZYGY standard interface.

Avnet’s new ZUBoard is an example of such a platform and Avnet provides an example design showing the Dual Cam SYZYGY working with the ZUBoard for various embedded vision applications.

“This prototyping module is specially created for designers who are focusing on IoT vision, AI and computer imaging applications,” said Jim Beneke, vice president Advanced Applications Group, Avnet. “By using these industry-standard components along with the SYZYGY open standard for the module, designers will get fast peripheral connectivity. This is key for camera applications that also need to be low-cost and small.”

The Dual Cam SYZYGY module features:

  • the AP1302 image signal processor from onsemi, which performs image processing functions to convert the raw sensor data into a standard image format including auto white balance and auto exposure. These processing functions also help to reduce design efforts of developing an embedded camera system. The AP1302 interfaces the sensors and the host processor using MIPI-CSI2 lanes.

  • interchangeable dual Rayprus camera modules based on the onsemi AR0144 image sensor that have a low-profile lens with an 84 degree field of view and good low-light sensitivity. They incorporate an innovative global shutter pixel design optimized for accurate and fast capture of moving objects in the scene.

  • onsemi CMOS digital image sensors with 1-megapixel resolution (1280 horizontal by 800 vertical resolution) and widely compatible MIPI interface (Mobile Industry Processor Interface). The sensors capture 60 frames per second at full resolution. Their innovative global shutter pixel design is optimized for accurate and fast capture of moving scenes while producing clear, sharp digital images. The ability to capture clear images is critical for applications such as scanning, industrial inspection and drone navigation.

The Avnet-designed Dual Cam SYZYGY module is available today in the Americas, EMEA, APAC and Japan for $199 (USD).
