The use of machines that are enabled by AI to handle tasks independently will enrich the workplace, according to a new report released during automatica 2018, trade fair for robots and automation; however, many employees surveyed for the report consider the term 'artificial intelligence' to be misleading as a machine cannot learn intelligently or act autonomously like a human being.

The automatica Trend Index 2018 also found that majority of US and UK workers believe AI innovations will make robots perform increasingly effectively as assistants to humans. Seventy four percent of US workers and 67% of UK workers surveyed believe AI will make machines better assistants in the workplace.

Seventy percent of US employees are confident that AI will be controlled by the state. However, 74% of UK employees says it's important that AI will be strictly controlled by law.

On the question of how AI will affect the world of work, Dr. Wieland Holfelder from Google in the run-up to automatica 2018 in Munich said: “In principle, there is nothing artificial about artificial intelligence. It's made by humans for humans - so we need to maintain that spirit."

Automatica 2018 took place in Munich from 19th-22nd June.
