The Teseo III product family from STMicroelectronics is a single-chip standalone positioning IC which can receive signals from multiple satellite navigation systems, including the Chinese BeiDou, the US GPS, the European Galileo, Russia’s GLONASS and Japan’s QZSS. The satellite-tracking IC is suitable for applications including in-car navigation systems, telematics systems, portable, marine, and fitness.

Building on the industry-leading performance of ST’s Teseo II single-chip satellite-tracking ICs, the Teseo III family is currrently comprised of two series: the STA8089 series adds support for the BeiDou constellation to devices that remain pin-to-pin compatible with the Teseo II series, to enable fast customer-application migration; and the STA8090 series adds a new, more efficient power-management unit, along with support for China’s BeiDou satellites. This generation also leverages ST’s investment and support for sensor fusion found in automotive dead reckoning and Assisted-GNSS functions.

Single-chip solutions, the STA8089 and STA8090 series integrate the RF, digital control circuits and flash memory. This enables simultaneous tracking of multiple satellites regardless of their constellation and also allows exceptional accuracy in urban canyons, where building and other obstructions make satellite visibility challenging. Teseo III combines high positioning accuracy and indoor sensitivity performance of -162dBm (in tracking mode) with powerful processing capabilities and superior design flexibility. Operating over a temperature range from -40 to +85°C, the Teseo III STA8089 and STA8090 series offer a fast time to first fix of 30s in cold start and under 1s in hot start.

Antonio Radaelli, Director, Infotainment Business Unit, STMicroelectronics, commented: “By adding the BeiDou satellite-tracking capabilities to existing support for all global systems, the Teseo III delivers greater accuracy and location precision in Asia and throughout the world. Teseo III allows in-car navigation systems, telematics systems, portable, marine, fitness, and other devices needing to use the best signal from any system to deliver outstanding accuracy across urban, rural and mountainous environments.”

The STA8089 is supplied in a 7x7x0.85mm VFQFPN56 package, while the STA8090 is supplied in a 5x6x1.2mm TFBGA99 package. The Teseo III is now in qualification and will be available for sampling to customers in Q1 2014.
