A radar sensor system, which monitors the blind spot in the car’s rear section, has been developed by Infineon Technologies and German automotive supplier, Hella. The radar scan detects moving objects even in poor weather and independent of the direction and speed of their motion. For precision, the system features antennas, which, for example, warn drivers of vehicles coming from behind when changing lanes.

Infineon’s BGT24Axxas Microwave Monolithic Integrated Circuits (MMICs) improve the SNR, ensuring precision in the detection and signalling of objects in the blind spot. Featuring oscillators, transmission amplifiers and reception branches with LNAs and I/Q mixers, the MMICs are fully integrated, enabling a smaller, more cost-effective radar system which consumes less power. The radar sensor system is, therefore, suitable for vehicles outside of the premium segment.

According to Strategy Analytics, the number of radar-supported driver assistance systems installed worldwide will grow from 14m to more than 40m by 2020.

The radar sensor system is available now.
