Network appliance platforms to serve 5G and WiFi 6

Portwell has announced new product lines in its Advanced Network Solutions (ANS) family of computing platforms for software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) appliances. The new products offer the high throughput and connectivity options required to support the demanding requirements of 5G cellular and WiFi 6 applications.

Both the ANS-2141/42 and the ANS-8A64P are compact rack-mount units – two can fit side-by-side in a 1U slot.

The new IPC platforms, which are based on an Intel Atom processor, are backed by software support to ease implementation in SD-WAN system designs, including DPDK, Open vSwitch and a PoE+ API. The software includes sample code for a software switch.

The ANS-2141 is based on the Apollo Lake x5-E3940 version of the Intel Atom processor with four cores, and the ANS-2142 on the x5-E3930 with two cores.

The ANS-2141/42 platforms also feature:

  • Two or eight Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) RJ45 ports, with optional Power-over-Ethernet+ (PoE+) support
  • RJ45 console
  • One HDMI and two USB3.0 ports
  • One DDR3L SO-DIMM module with ECC and capacity up to 8GB, and offering throughput of 1866MT/s, 1600MT/s or 1333MT/s
  • 16GB eMMC for data storage
  • TPM2.0 module
  • Mini-PCIe (PCIe/USB2.0) interface
  • M.2 Key-B slot for PCIe/USB3.0
  • SATA III port
  • Two micro SIM slots

The new ANS-8A64P is a computing platform for SD-WAN appliances based on the Intel Atom Denverton (C3000 series) processor featuring four or eight cores. Offering a compact design and rich connections, it provides the high data throughput required for use in network distribution systems as well as in data centres. It is also suitable as a platform for edge computing applications in the factory, office, data centre and elsewhere.

Key features of the ANS-8A64P include:

  • Two SFP+ 10GbE ports
  • Up to 12 GbE ports
  • Up to 12 ports of PoE/PoE+
  • RJ45 console
  • Two DDR4 SO-DIMM modules with ECC and capacity up to 32GB, and offering throughput of 2400MT/s or 2133MT/s
  • Two USB 3.0 ports
  • TPM 2.0 module
  • Mini-PCIe (PCIe/USB2.0) interface
  • M.2 Key-B slot for PCIe/USB3.0
  • SATA III connector
