The iconic London black cab, a symbol of the London's heritage, is embarking on a transformative journey towards becoming a zero-carbon mobility technology entity.

TR Fastenings is playing a crucial role in this evolution, aiding the iconic vehicle in transitioning towards a more sustainable future.

Globally, the surge in demand for electric vehicles is reshaping the traditional automotive supply chain, compelling providers to adopt new methodologies and to be increasingly responsive to customer needs. This shift was highlighted when TR Fastenings was approached by the London EV Company (LEVC) to address a pressing issue.

The requirement

LEVC, a subsidiary of the Geely Holding Group, is advancing its electric TX taxi, a pioneering venture in the market. Operating in a just-in-time environment, LEVC required a dependable automotive components provider capable of delivering consistent and seamless service. With their previous supplier unable to meet these needs, LEVC sought a new partner to enhance and secure its supply chain and to support operational, technical, and logistical aspects.

During this crucial transition, TR and LEVC collaborated closely, reviewing each component and striving to rationalise the number of parts used, the types of fasteners, and reducing the need for bespoke special parts where possible. TR Fastenings, with its extensive experience in designing and manufacturing fasteners for automotive applications, was chosen as the preferred supplier, bolstered by its existing relationships with other Geely Holding Group companies.

The solution

As a global fastener specialist, TR Fastenings' design and engineering teams played a pivotal role from the start. Through an internal review to understand LEVC's specific requirements, dedicated project teams from both TR and LEVC were formed to ensure close collaboration and to meet the tight deadlines.

TR Fastenings swiftly established a stable, full-service provision for LEVC, critical for the launch of a new product. The company now supplies around 350 components used in the vehicles, including those supplied to Tier 1 manufacturers.

Dan Pereira, Engineering Manager, UK and Ireland, at TR Fastenings, highlighted the project's challenges, noting the importance of rapid response and understanding customer needs. He emphasised TR Fastenings' ability to meet these challenges and its commitment to fulfilling customer requirements.

Project challenges

LEVC required immediate support to meet increasing demand. TR Fastenings stepped in, offering additional on-site customer support, reviewing stock quantities, establishing working relationships, and collaborating with engineers to ensure a smooth transition. The company also managed other bespoke parts for LEVC, incorporating them into the bill of materials, thus ensuring the continuity of critical stock supply and uninterrupted production.

Project conclusion

TR Fastenings' comprehensive, full-service approach not only averted manufacturing disruptions but also fostered a lasting relationship with a new client. This success was celebrated at the Automechanika Show in Birmingham, where TR showcased the electric TX taxi, sparking great interest among attendees.

Sven Brehler, Global Director of Engineering at TR Fastenings, commented on the significance of the TX taxi at the event and the company's readiness to lead in fastening solutions for the expanding EV market: “The TX was a great talking point which opened up conversations about our capabilities and vast product range. As the EV market continues to expand, TR is well placed to lead on fastening solutions for this sector.”
