At embedded world 2023, on the Digi-Key booth, Kristian McCann speaks with Roger Wendelken, Sr. VP, MCU Business Division at Renesas Electronics about new technology developments in MCUs.

Renesas Electronics Corporation delivers trusted embedded design innovation with complete semiconductor solutions that enable billions of connected, intelligent devices to enhance the way people work and live. A global leader in microcontrollers, analogue, power, and SoC products, Renesas provides comprehensive solutions for a broad range of automotive, industrial, home electronics, office automation, and information communication technology applications that help shape a limitless future.

One of Renesas’ core businesses is the MCU business. Renesas ships over nine million MCU units daily.

MCU families for commercial applications

RL78/G15

The RL78/G15 is a general-purpose microcontroller with a 16MHz operating frequency. There is a wide lineup available, including the smallest 8-pin package in the RL78 Family, and support for a wide range of operating ambient temperatures from -40°C to 125°C.

The built-in high-speed on-chip oscillator with high accuracy (±1.0%), the data flash, the rich serial interfaces, and the comparator make it ideal for compact applications where space comes at a premium.

A full development environment for the RL78/G15 is provided, including an evaluation board (Fast Prototyping Board) enabling writing and debugging programmes by simply connecting a USB cable, a Smart Configurator that facilitates software design with GUI, and an Arduino library.

Moreover, it is compatible with the existing RL78 Family and can be used in a wide range of applications, from home appliances and consumer electronics to industrial equipment.

RX line

The RX family consists of four product series: the flagship RX700 series, with the fastest performance and most advanced functions; the standard RX600 series; the RX200 series, which delivers an optimal balance of power efficiency and high performance; and the entry-level RX100 series, with extremely low power consumption.

These four series encompass a range of products that provide seamless scalability from small-scale to large-scale applications.

RA family

The flexible Renesas Advanced (RA) 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) are 32-bit MCUs with the Arm Cortex-M33, -M23 and -M4 processor cores and PSA certification. RA delivers key advantages compared to competitive Arm Cortex-M MCUs by providing stronger embedded security, superior CoreMark performance and low power operation.

PSA certification provides customers the confidence and assurance to quickly deploy secure IoT endpoint and edge devices, and smart factory equipment for Industry 4.0.

The Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP) is an enhanced software package designed to provide easy-to-use, scalable, high-quality software for embedded system designs using Renesas RA family of Arm Microcontrollers.

With the support of Arm TrustZone and other advanced security features, FSP provides a quick and versatile way to build secure, connected IoT devices using production-ready drivers, Azure RTOS, FreeRTOS, and other middleware stacks.
