Solid-state battery technology passes nail penetration test Solid-state battery technology passes nail penetration test

Nuvvon’s proprietary polymer electrolyte technology has successfully passed a series of rigorous nail penetration tests with both Graphite-NMC811 and Lithium-NMC9. The nail tests create a short circuit inside the cell to determine if the battery catches fire or explodes.

In both sets of tests, which were conducted independently at The University of Texas at Austin (UTA), traditional 1Ah cells of commercial grade were built with either Nuvvon SPE (solid polymer electrolyte) or conventional liquid electrolyte. In testing, the cell containing the liquid electrolyte exploded instantly, whereas neither of Nuvvon’s SPE cells, the Graphite-NMC811 nor the Lithium-NMC9 ignited.

“This is a major accomplishment for Nuvvon,” states Jonathan Lex, Chief Operating Officer at Nuvvon. “Battery safety is a key concern for our partners and customers, and we’re delighted to demonstrate our proprietary technology’s safety characteristics through independent testing, paving the way for faster commercialisation of our technology.”

Nuvvon’s solid polymer electrolyte is a pure polymer system which does not contain any sulphide or oxide nanoparticles. It has room temperature ionic conductivity of greater than 1mS/cm at 25°C. It enables thin format for separators (≤20µm) and is used as the catholyte, anolyte, and separator. It utilises low cost, easy to procure raw materials and the cells are made on the existing Li-ion process.

The characteristics of Nuvvon’s proprietary technology make it ideal for demanding applications, such as portable electronics, aerospace/UAVs, and electric vehicles.
