UK-based design house PRFI has moved into new premises at Abbey Mills in Ickleton, near Cambridge.

The company which specialises in microwave and millimetre-wave IC design, now has a larger clean room and more office space to allow for expansion of the business.

Once part of Plextec before a 2015 demerger, it is now owned by CML Microcircuits.

The move gives PRFI extra space including a 100 % increase in floor space for its clean room, as well as additional laboratory space, meeting rooms and a spacious open floor office.

It is a convenient location with rail links, and proximity to the M11 and Stansted Airport.

PRFI CEO Liam Devlin is bullish about the move. “It will enable us to cement PRFI as the design house brand for microwave and millimetre-wave IC design.”

The company has already produced designs for semiconductor heavy hitters including Renesas, Samsung, Sony, Qorvo and Wolfspeed.

“We also work with companies that do not possess the necessary skills internally. That includes start-ups and bigger OEMs,” says Devlin. “We can turn around designs faster than companies’ internal resources.”

We can work from customer specifications or we can consult customer and produce specifications form the best path forward,” Devlin explains. “And some come with an open-ended question – how can we do this?”

That works for PRFI as one its strengths is the all-round, comprehensive knowledge of RF and microwave design supplied in depth by its team of designers.

“We have complementary skills here, covering IC design, module design, pcb and test,” says Devlin. “We share the work and adapt. It’s a collaborative effort based on a positive team attitude, there no prima donnas.”

The customer base is growing. PRFI has projects on the go with UK defence contractors as well as the medical and satcoms market.

It also has close links with semiconductor foundries, enabling it to choose the right solution for customer requirements.
