In February 2023 independent UK defence electronics manufacturer MPE of Liverpool became the first manufacturer globally to publish independent test certificates confirming the compliance of its HEMP (High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse) protection filters with the requirements of the latest defence standard, Mil-Std-188-125-1A.

MPE has now released its full HEMP filter range compliant with Mil-Std-188-125-1A.

Across a ten-month period, MPE completed an extensive and innovative research and development programme, conducted at MPE in Liverpool along with a rigorous testing programme completed independently by Jaxon Engineering & Maintenance of Colorado Springs, widely regarded as one of the international leaders in EMP hardening and survivability.

The end result was MPE’s range of Mil-Std-1A compliant filters spanning 16A to 1200A and including 2-line, 3-line, and 4-line options. Whilst filters from this range have already been manufactured and shipped, MPE officially released their full filter range on 31st March 2023.

Radically different to MPE’s previous HEMP filter ranges, the Mil-Std-1A compliant filters feature single-line, modular elements which are line-replaceable and may be easily added to, allowing for future installation expansion where required. The provision of external mounting feet and the inclusion of separate input and output enclosures also greatly simplify installation and reduce the installation time required on site.

MPE has designed the filter circuits – from the ground up – to comply with the stringent E1 and E2 pulse current injection (PCI) and shielding effectiveness requirements of the Mil-Std-188-125-1A protection standard. These high-performance filters also protect critical national infrastructure (CNI) from the effects of intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI).

All lines are individually filtered with high-energy transient suppressors and feature inductive input to offer both good continuous wave electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance and superior transient handling performance, even on supplies with low source impedance.

Individual filters through to 1200A are available. For sites with higher currents, individual 1200A units can be paralleled to address requirements through to 6000A.

With MPE having exported to almost 30 different territories during 2022, this further new range of HEMP filters builds on the continuous and very significant EMP filter growth MPE has experienced since 2020, with EMP filter sales having increased by some 500%.

All MPE filters can be quoted for and supplied delivered duty paid (DDP) inclusive of shipping and all duties. MPE has been granted an Approved Exporter status by UK HMRC and utilises a specialist freight forwarding partner to ensure the swift transportation of goods.

In addition, features such as Tip’n’Tell indicator labels are incorporated, ensuring the integrity of shipments. Once such a label has been affixed to a packing case, that crate cannot be tipped without leaving evidence of mishandling.
