This year’s submissions included a robot that can trim eyebrows with a thread, a microchip-controlled refrigerator that monitors the shelf-life of foods and reminds the user via smartphone, and an energy self-sufficient trip-data tracking system with theft warning and tracking for bicycles.
The results were as follows:
Fifth place: Smart Condition Monitoring, providing cost-effective solutions for the ‘smart home’.
Fourth place: ZHI-Fridge, a monitoring system in refrigerators aiming to reduce food wastage and promote healthy eating.
Third place: AETSURA, a robotic arm to provide automatic eyebrow threading, helping those with physical disabilities.
Second place: Body Warn, a self-sufficient body sensor providing an energy-efficient emergency call system for persons at risk of being injured.

First place: Ghostbuster, a system to alert ‘ghost drivers’ – those who drive on the wrong side of the road.

AETSURA, Body Warn and Ghostbuster received a cash prize of 500, 750 and 1000€ respectively. All three teams have also been entered into the international iCan competition, taking place in Beijing, China in August 2017.
