Tech Show London kicked off at the ExCeL London yesterday (12th March) with a record-breaking number of female speakers. Almost three-quarters (73%) of the Mainstage programme was female-led, breaking the previous record of 65%.

The day started with Chris Barton, Founder and Creator of Shazam, delivering a Keynote speech on the creation of Shazam and why having an original idea isn’t enough. Barton admitted that he almost gave up on the company after difficulties building music recognition tech, but he powered through to develop the breakthrough AI technology that would become Shazam's core.

Highlight sessions also included a panel chaired by Baroness Joanna Shields OBE, Founder and CEO of BenevolentAI, examining the intersection of AI, child safety, and digital regulation. Speaking on the Mainstage, Shields argued that while AI algorithms are pushing users toward harmful content, it’s up to the businesses deploying the AI to prioritise ethical safeguards, governance, and security frameworks.

Former head of Williams Formula One Team, Claire Williams OBE, now Fortescue Zero Ambassador, also shared her insights on building high-performance teams and the role technology and innovation play. As well as highlighting the need for continuous improvement, Williams also reinforced the need for diversity among teams, especially within traditionally male-dominated industries. “Leadership success is not just about technology but about people and culture,” Williams said.

Tech leaders will be back at the show today, Thursday, 13th March, where David Rowan, technology expert and former editor of WIRED UK will discuss the need to invest in people as well as AI. John Strickland, aviation consultant and media commentator, will then chair a panel on the digital transformation efforts of airlines, featuring the ex-CEO of British Airways, Alex Cruz, and the current CEO of Ryanair, Eddie Wilson.
