RS launched DesignSpark Mechanical last year arguing that the increasing availability of 3D printing and rising pressure for quick prototyping means that engineers cannot afford to wait for CAD departments to create physical concepts. The free design tool combines SpaceClaim’s industry-leading direct modelling technology with a digital parts library containing millions of products including RS Components 3D catalogues. RS says the software is ideal for introducing electronic design students to the world of 3D design, being an intuitive and gesture-based modelling system that makes 3D design accessible to engineers of all disciplines without the need for CAD expertise.
The workshops will provide an introduction to the basics of DesignSpark Mechanical, with instruction on how to use the Select, Pull, Move, Fill and Combine tools, as well as the user interface and other essential tools within the software. The second part of the workshop will be a practical exercise that enables attendees to create an enclosure design for a Raspberry Pi board, finally producing an STL file for use with a 3D printer to build their prototype design.
