At this year’s MD&M West, Metcal will showcase its Scorpion rework system, solder ball replacement kit and MX-HPDC dual cartridge hand-piece. The event is scheduled to take place from 10th to 12th February at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. The company will be located at booth 524.

Metcal's Scorpion rework system with automaticplacement package (APR-1200A-SRS-MOB) is capable of 50mm of motorised travel in the Z-axis and a full 360° in ϴ (Theta). The system offers fine motor control in the Z-axis and ϴ during alignment of the component to the pad.The SmartPlace technology vision system features a dual, full colour HD camera with a selectable camera view. It also provides diffused LED lighting for shadow-free component alignment.

Reworking small chip components such as 01005, 0201, 0402 and 0602s can be difficult and require specialised tools. the company has developed a technique and identified a selection of tools that enable the operator to rework these small components with repeatability and consistency. Metcal will display its solder ball placement kit which is designed to meet these challenging applications.

The success of conduction soldering depends upon the availability and controlled flow of thermal energy into the connection during two critical phases: flux activation and intermetallic bond formation. To meet these higher thermal demands, the company will display the dual cartridge hand-piece and work stand along with a series of five dual-shaft cartridge geometries.
