CEA-Leti will make two presentations during the EU-Japan Symposium on 5G, ‘From Challenges to Standardisation’, in Tokyo, 8-10th of February. The purpose of the gathering of European and Japanese stakeholders such as the European Commission, industry manufacturers, telecommunication operators, service providers, regulators, research organisations and government ministries is to discuss Japanese and EU perspectives for development of 5G communications systems and networks.

On the 8th of February, Dominique Noguet will discuss 'New Modulation Techniques Below 6 GHz'. On the 10th of February, Emilio Calvanese-Strinatti will present on the MiWEBA Project, an EU-Japanese research project designed to bring millimeter-wave technology to mobile radio. The symposium also will include discussions and networking with high-level industry executives and government officials.

Leti is recognised worldwide as a pioneer in 5G research and development. Leti Vice President Laurent Hérault, who was instrumental in launching the event and forming the technical program, is the EU’s scientific adviser for the symposium. Leti, which has collaborated with Japanese industry in R&D for more than 10 years, opened an office in Tokyo in 2008.

The symposium is supported by the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) in Europe, the Fifth Generation Mobile Communications Promotion Forum (5GMF) in Japan, the European Commission (EC), the French embassy in Japan and Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC). 5G PPP is focused on delivering solutions, architectures, technologies and standards for next-gen communication infrastructure.

Japan’s 5GMF was launched to gather the main stakeholders in Japan and coordinate their activities towards research & development and standardisation. Japan plans to use the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics as a showcase for live 5G networks.

5G PPP and 5GMF agreed in 2015 to jointly explore collaboration opportunities in 5G communication systems and networks.

The EU-Japan Symposium on 5G also is one of the major events scheduled during the 'Japanese-French Year of Innovation' that was launched in October 2015 by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Events during the 12-month period are designed especially to promote public-private partnerships with a focus on high-impact topics that encourage innovation.
