The ‘GaN Systems Cup’ is the premier student competition in power electronics and related majors in China. Throughout the years, the competition has brought together the top engineering teams from leading universities to showcase what’s possible in new or improved power electronics systems using GaN power transistors.
This year, teams are challenged to design a high efficiency, high-power density bidirectional AC/DC converter using GaN Systems 650V GS66502B transistors that meet several requirements:
- 400W rated output power
- 220VAC input voltage and 300-400VDC output voltage
- Achieve 94%+ efficiency in both directions at full load
- 30W/cm3 power density
GaN technology has become a critical piece in power systems across industries from consumer electronics, data centre, industrial, automotive, and renewable energy – areas that demand greater efficiency, power, and performance.
Teams going to the final round include: Beijing Jiaotong University, Hangzhou University of Electronic Science and Technology, He Hai University, Heilongjiang University of Science and Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Maritime University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Yanshan University (Liu Meng Group), Zhejiang University, Chinese Academy of Sciences University and Chongqing University of Technology.
The 2020 ‘GaN Systems Cup’ is sponsored by GaN Systems, CPSS and the organisation’s Science Popularisation Working Committee of China Power Supply Society, Ningbo Xici Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. and Itech Electronics Co., Ltd. and undertaken by Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
