Apple’s upcoming iOS 19 update, which is expected to roll out in the second half of 2025, indicates a change in how iPhones manage power.

Among the features reportedly being tested is a new AI-powered tool designed to extend battery life by adjusting energy usage in real time.

According to a Bloomberg report, this feature will analyse how each user interacts with their device and then draw on historical battery usage patterns to make intelligent predictions. It will then proactively reduce the power consumption of certain apps or functions based on these predictions.

Bloomberg’s report states that the new feature will use “battery data it has collected from users’ devices to understand trends and make predictions for when it should lower the power draw of certain applications or features,” meaning that iPhones could automatically limit background processes, reduce screen refresh rates, or delay non-urgent notifications during periods when battery drain is likely to spike – without the user needing to adjust settings manually.

An additional user-facing feature reported to be in testing is a more informative lock screen display. When the device is charging, the lock screen will indicate how long it will take for the battery to reach a full charge, offering clearer feedback than the current charging icon or percentage.

Smarter Siri and other expected updates

Beyond battery management, iOS 19 is rumoured to introduce a more intelligent and conversational Siri. Leveraging on-device generative AI, the new Siri will reportedly handle more complex instructions, understand context better, and potentially work offline for a wider range of tasks. This change may also tie into Apple’s broader strategy to strengthen on-device processing and privacy, especially as competition intensifies in the AI voice assistant space.

Other features expected as part of the update include:

  • Enhanced personalisation in notifications and suggestions
  • Improved accessibility features, possibly with AI-assisted voice or text recognition
  • Continued integration of AI across Apple’s core apps such as photos, messages, and Safari

Apple is anticipated to provide a more detailed preview of iOS 19 during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, with the public release likely to follow its usual pattern in September alongside the next iPhone 17 launch.
