XMOS launches Ethernet-based LED Tile Reference Design Kit

XMOS, the leader in event-driven processors, has launched an Ethernet-based LED Tile Reference Design Kit to enable digital designers to rapidly develop LED tile systems using daisy chains of Ethernet scan boards. All requirements are implemented entirely in software, which is available on an open source basis as a royalty free download.

The LED Reference Design Kit includes an XC-3 scan board preloaded with LED application software and a 16×32 RGB LED module so digital designers can immediately start to develop their LED designs. Additional XC-3 scan boards and modules can easily be plugged in to create a complete display.

James Foster, President & CEO of XMOS, said: “XMOS is setting new rules for signage and display manufacturers by putting every aspect of LED operation under software control, enabling designers to dramatically improve image quality and reduce artifacts specific to LED displays. Our LED tile application software is available royalty free, adding to the growing body of XMOS open source hardware.”

Each XC-3 can accept video input over UDP on an Ethernet network. Video can be sourced directly from a PC using the open-source video player mplayer included in the LED Reference Design, or from an external data processing engine.
