Students challenged to create innovative IoT design

The “University IoT Challenge” has been launched by Farnell element14 in partnership with Rohde & Schwarz. The aim of the competition is to introduce university students to the world of electronics. The competition challenges students to come up with creative ideas using £5,000 of products from Farnell element14 to create an IoT (Internet of Things) based product that would positively impact individuals who need assistance in their everyday lives.

Entrants will be asked to submit their ideas online at, along with the bill of materials required to build a prototype.

Potential ideas would include an IoT device to test water quality in a third world country or sensor system to monitor activity of elderly loved ones living alone.

Entrants taking part in this exciting challenge are encouraged to be as creative and informative as possible in their entry, whilst ensuring that their concept is realistic and could be developed into a prototype.

Farnell element14 will choose four finalists based on the merit and originality, which will then be put to a public vote on the element14 community.

Winners will receive the bill of materials for the project/idea, the balance of £5,000 to spend at, a bundle of test and measurement products from Rhode & Schwarz which includes 1 x RTC1000 Oscilloscope (pictured), 50 MHz, 2ch 8ch MSO  and 1 x NGE102 Power supply and support from Farnell element14’s team to help build and test the design.

We have a long history of supporting our customers’ development, design and pre-production requirements and this competition will help make a great idea, that might not otherwise be developed, to become a real project”.
