STMicroelectronics will exhibit its latest solutions for healthcare applications at MEDTEC Japan 2013. The field of healthcare is recognized as an area of fast-paced growth due to factors such as an ageing population, soaring medical costs, health consciousness, and prevention of infection spreads.
At its booth, ST will demonstrate various solutions targeting applications for checking the state of a person’s health and diagnosing their conditions.

Demos at ST’s booth include:

Body Gateway
Remote monitoring can help understand the state of an elderly person’s health and of patients with cardiovascular disease in a timely and accurate fashion. ST’s “body gateway” remote monitoring solution is built around a wearable device integrating multiple components such as a microcontroller, an acceleration sensor, an analog front-end IC, communication IC, and a power supply IC. The device connects to a network and allows remote monitoring of the wearer’s biometric information, including heart-beat, pulse, and breathing-rate abnormalities and collapses, making the solution suitable for use in elderly homes and hospital wards. The ST demonstration at MEDTEC will showcase the collection of biometric information using a prototype wearable device and display of the information on a tablet computer.

Lab-on-Chip
Veredus Laboratories, a majority-owned subsidiary of ST, will present a multiplexed molecular diagnostic solution specifically designed for decentralized laboratories. The lab-on-chip, a microchip-based disposable device integrating Polymerase Chain Reaction and a DNA microarray, is able to simultaneously detect multiple pathogens and DNA mutations in a single test. This makes it particularly suited for the detection of the main influenza viruses, tuberculosis with its drug resistances, and other germs which would require multiple and complex tests to be identified. Veredus’ high-accuracy molecular test can detect pathogens in a very short time and due to its portability and ease of use, it can be deployed in a variety of locations contributing to preventing the spread of pathogens that cause numerous types of conditions.

Pulse Generator for Ultrasound Imaging
Against the backdrop of a demand for swift diagnosis, there is a growing need for the miniaturization of ultra-high-frequency devices from healthcare organizations that are unable to accommodate large-size devices and for situations outside of medical facilities such as house visits or sports facilities. ST will display its STHV748 high-performance pulse generator designed for ultrasound imaging applications. With embedded peripheral circuits such as a T/R switch (transmission/receiving switch) and noise blocking diodes, a maximum output of ±90V, a maximum operating frequency of 20MHz, and high-precision pulse-signal transmission control, ST’s pulse generator contributes to the accurate visualization of a person’s internal information.

ST solutions showed at MEDTEC also include the dual-interface EEPROM development kit for personal healthcare devices, ASICs for medical devices, and real-time PCR solutions for molecular diagnosis.

ST will be exhibiting at MEDTEC Japan 2013 from Wednesday, April 24, through Thursday, April 25, at the Tokyo Big Sight, Booth No.3314.
