Shift Labs is the winner of the 2017 Global Health Innovator Award. The award was presented at The MedTech Conference which took place last month in Santa Clara, CA. This is the award’s inaugural year and was a result of the conference’s new Innovations in Global Health Program, which puts a focus on medical innovation in the developing world.

In addition to the recognition of their technology’s sustainability and impact in resource-constrained areas, Shift Labs also receives $50,000 with the award provided by both TEAMFund and MedTech Innovator with support from industry leaders including BD, Medtronic, and Stryker.

TEAMFund (Transforming Equity and Access in Medtech) is a combination non-profit and impact fund with a mission to expand access to affordable medical technologies that address unmet needs in underserved parts of the world.

MedTech Innovator is a nonprofit global competition and accelerator for medical technologies with a goal to improve patient lives by accelerating companies who are making an impact in healthcare.

Earlier this year, Shift Labs secured CE Mark approval and also has FDA approval for their DripAssist Infusion Rate Monitor. The device addresses the need for more accurate, easy to use tools for IV infusions that do not currently exist in settings where challenges associated with cost, infrastructure, training, and supply chains are common.

DripAssist lowers the barrier to correctly administering IV infusions by allowing any healthcare worker to setup an infusion and monitor the rate at which the infusion is delivered. The device is the only portable, AA battery-powered IV infusion tool to be both CE-marked and FDA-cleared. To date, the device has seen use in over 24 countries from Zimbabwe to the United States.

Shift Labs CEO Beth Kolko, a professor of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington, commented on the recognition, “As an organisation, Shift Labs is honored to receive this award, and we’re exceptionally excited because the TEAMFund initiative aligns so well with our vision of creating sustainable medical devices that fit the needs of many markets worldwide.”
