A voice coil drive instead of the more usual solenoid or geared motor mechanism which enables much faster open/close speeds to be achieved, is the heart of a new servo shutter mechanism developed by Geeplus Europe.
The direct drive of the control rig allows the device to fully open or close in < 5ms. Although this speed is achievable using a solenoid, only an open/close function is obtained, while a geared device cannot cannot approach these speeds.

If a positional encoder is incorporated within the shutter device it can be partially opened at speed to any position, enabling it to create the function of any iris.

The first version developed by Geeplus has a 36mm aperture, but the company says that both smaller or larger versions can be produced.

Using processes and technology which allows even small quantities to be produced economically, Geeplus says that its device has increased reliability due to less wear. The use of positioning sensors allows the shutter blades to be started or stopped at the end of every process without the use of a mechanical stop.
