The National Microelectronics Institute (NMI) and the Scottish Semiconductor Supplier Forum (SSSF) have announced that the boards of both trade associations have agreed to a merger. The move sees the NMI assume full responsibility for all activities of the SSSF, whose 60-strong membership will be invited to transfer to the NMI.
The NMI had 160 members prior to the merger and represents the interests of the semiconductor industry in the UK and Ireland. A not-for-profit organisation funded by its members, the NMI’s membership spans the complete industry supply chain.

NMI CEO Derek Boyd said, “The NMI has already collaborated very successfully with the SSSF over many years so we’re thrilled that we’re now combining our activities. With very little overlap in our respective memberships, the core competences within the NMI will be extended, bringing even more value to members.”

SSSF Chairman, David Cairney said, “Our board’s proposal to merge the SSSF into the NMI was well received by our members, who recognised the real networking benefits the move will bring. In the current economic climate it’s more important than ever for businesses to be able to tap into the knowledge and experiences of as many others as possible. Absorbing the SSSF into a much larger and like-minded national trade association is a logical step to take.”

As a result of the merger, the SSSF have nominated Andre Hawrilyw, Managing Director of Compugraphics International to stand as a representative on the NMI Board. Mr Hawrilyw commented, “I am delighted to be nominated for a position on NMI’s Board of Directors. The fusion of the NMI with a supplier organisation like the SSSF creates synergies and partnerships which will benefit the UK semiconductor industry and enable it to compete more effectively in a demanding global market”.
