Robokebab: 21st century fast food

Robotics has now made its way into the most unlikely place of all: kebab shops. North London’s Super Kebab takeaway has replaced manual kebab slicing with the Atalay doner robot, which uses sensors to slice off perfect cuts of lamb.

Super Kebab, which was named London’s best takeaway earlier this year, is the first UK kebab shop to install such a robot. Shipped over from Turkey, the Atalay doner robot costs around £5,000. With a total of 1.3m kebabs sold across Britain every day, it’s only a matter of time before other shops also consider robotics.

Hakan Gorenli, Super Kebab’s Manager, said that he was not sad about abandoning the traditional method of doner slicing. However, while using robotics to slice doner meat is considered a more precise and hygienic method, one cannot help but question what will happen to the former carvers.
