Vishay has broadened its optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of a 3mm (T1) infrared emitter with performance characteristics comparable to leading 5mm emitters. The new VSLB3940 940-nm infrared emitter features an on-axis radiant intensity of 65 mW/sr and optical power of 40 mW at 100 mA — which represents about an 8% performance improvement over the larger, 5-mm TSAL6200 in a 40% smaller form factor.
The small size of the VSLB3940 makes it an excellent choice for the compact infrared (IR) remote control units used with digital cameras, notebook PCs, and MP3/video players. Until now, the 3-mm emitters available for these miniaturized remote controls have forced designers to trade away performance for space savings, particularly when it came to transmit distance and off-axis radiant intensity. The new VSLB3940 eliminates this tradeoff, giving designers the performance they need and the space savings enabled by a 3-mm component size.

The VSLB3940 is a high-speed emitter with switching times of 15 ns. It can support data rates up to 30 Mbit/s. It features an angle of half intensity of ±22° and a forward voltage of 1.35 V at 100 mA. In addition to remote control applications, the VSLB3940 can be used for wireless communication, optical counters, card readers, and light barrier or interrupter applications.
