Maxim Integrated Products to Demonstrate Innovations for Smarter Energy Applications at Metering, Billing/CRM Europe 2011

Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. will showcase new technologies for smarter energy applications from power-grid infrastructure to smart meters and smart plugs for home appliances at Metering, Billing/CRM 2011, Europe’s leading Smart Utility Event in Amsterdam/The Netherlands.

Visitors to Maxim’s booth E70 will be able to experience the powerful performance capabilities offered by Newport, Maxim’s new secure smart meter reference platform, discover how G3-PLC technology can substantially reduce communications infrastructure costs and learn how Maxim’s energy measurement SoCs are enabling new smart home applications.

Maxim’s Demo Highlights on Booth E70:

Newport – Smart meter platform: This is a complete reference platform for smart meters. Built around a 71M6541 metrology SoC, the MAXQ1050 secure coprocessor, the MAX2991/MAX2992 G3-PLC-chipset and an ARM® core, the design integrates NAN (Near Area Network) and HAN (Home Area Network) communications, multiple security features, and supporting circuitry to provide the most advanced metering platform on the market.

G3-PLC communications: A powerline communications demo showing mesh communications between meters and a concentrator. Based on Maxim’s G3-PLC technology, this exhibit demonstrates how meters automatically associate themselves when added to a powerline network.

Energy measurement: A compact outlet measurement unit (OMU) based on the 78M6612 energy measurement SoC. This demo monitors a 120V/240V single-phase load, calculates a complete set of parameters (from RMS voltage/current to power factor), and then displays real-time data on a PC.

Maxim’s Presentation at the Innovation & Technology Forum:

When: Oct. 5, 2011; from 10:50 – 11:20 am

Where: ‘INNOVATION SHOWCASE’ area in Hall 2, RAI Convention Center

Speaker: Kris Ardis, Director of Business Development – Advanced Metering Infrastructure Products; Maxim Integrated Products, Inc./ Irvine, USA

Presentation Title: A Smarter Meter Reference Design

The key to a smart meter is the integration of communication, metrology, and security. Maxim will introduce at Metering 2011 a fully functional smart meter reference design with two-way G3 PLC communication, advanced and accurate metrology, and integrated security features to help meter manufacturers jump start their development and optimize their BOMs.

The presentation will demonstrate:

– Benefits of using a proven G3-PLC communication solution

– Designing accurate metrology capable of supporting Class 0.2 metering requirements

– The importance of security for “endpoint hardening”
